Bookies

Bookmarks to Crochet

By: Jonas Matthies

Throw away those sales receipts, pieces of string or whatever else you are using for bookmarks and replace them with Bookies, cute little bug eyed creatures.  Bookies take only a few hours to make. Each one has a personality that you can create out of inexpensive, washable cotton yarn. Some are crazy, some are funny and all of them are cute. With stuffed heads and flat bodies they look adorable hanging out in your book all the while holding your place.

The directions are written and several pictures are included to assist you. I am a visual learner, so it helps me to see what the finished head, legs, or other body part of the Bookie should look like when it is completed.

There are a total of seventeen Bookie patterns rated from level 1 to level 3. I completed the Elmer the Unicorn as well as Gloria Giraffe for the kids next door. Both are level 2 projects. I let each of the children pick the Bookie they wanted and both of them, as well as me, are happy with the completed project.

The basic stitches are given for the crafter, but because of the construction, changes in color and small details, I would recommend these patterns for an experienced knitter. I have made that comment before, and will again tell you that if you are a novice knitter and want to create a bunch of Bookies, don’t let me rain on your parade. Go for it!

Matthies has an intro section in the beginning of the book telling the reader about his interesting journey as a person and a crocheter. Be sure to read it before you dive into creating your own Bookies.

Dover Publications has graciously agreed to mail a copy to one lucky person. To be entered into the random drawing, just like this post, leave a comment. Reblog, tweet, or talk about it on Facebook or other social media with a link and you will get additional chances to win. Just let me know how you have shared this post by leaving a comment so I can put in the right amount of tickets in my basket for you.

Book Review & Giveaway! Make in a Day Wedding Crafts

Make in a Day Wedding Crafts

By: Natalie Wright

Weddings these days can cost as much as our first house. I’ll admit that house was purchased in 1977, but wouldn’t you like to spend less money on your decorations and use that savings for your honeymoon? Natalie Wright has created cute, budget friendly wedding crafts to make your special wedding day perfect.

From place cards to centerpieces she has you covered. The complete, detailed instructions for each and every one of the 15 projects are included. Lists of materials, pictures and written instructions of each step as well as beautiful color photos of the finished items are included.

If you don’t have a wedding coming up in your family, look outside the box. This book will give you great ideas for birthday parties and other celebrations. You are only limited by your imagination. For example, the Glitter Sneakers are destined to be a hit with your daughter! Easy to make with four items, this craft would be a huge hit during a sleepover. Just have the girls bring a new pair of white canvas sneakers, you provide the craft glue and glitter and each of them can create something they will all love. As a mom, I would do this craft outside because we all know that glitter seems to magically multiply when used in the house.

My favorite craft in the book is the Wood Lantern. You can make it rustic or chic, depending upon your décor. There are two sizes so they could be used as centerpieces or decorations. Personalized by the stain or paint you choose as well as filling them with candles, fresh flowers or potted plants. They will fit beautifully in your wedding or party. The best thing about them is that they will be used after the festivities on your deck, porch or inside your home to remind you of your special day.

Dover Publications has graciously sent me a giveaway copy of this book. All you have to do is like this post, retweet or share to be in the drawing to win. The winner will be announced on my blog writeknit.wordpress.com March 5, 2019.

Book Review and Giveaway – Adorable Baby Knits by Jody Long

Adorable Baby Knits

25 Patterns for Boys and Girls

By: Jody Long

Jody Long has compiled a fabulous collection of knit patterns for babies in sizes 0 to 18 months. Adorable Baby Knits begins with handy information for all knitters. For example, she tells us how to substitute yarn, the equipment needed, walking the reader through a few basic stitches, her preferred cast on and other general information on the patterns. An abbreviation dictionary page is also included to ensure success with her patterns.

The variety of patterns offers options for both veteran and new knitters. Each pattern is rated by the skill level, on a scale from the easiest (1) to the most challenging (4). The patterns each have a box at the beginning with easy to access information. It includes the list of materials needed, the measurements as well as the gauge with a reminder to “TAKE TIME TO CHECK GAUGE”. As a knitter, you know the importance of checking your gauge even though you would rather jump into the project with a wing and a prayer. But nothing is as frustrating as working diligently on a project only to have it be too big or too small for the recipient of your gift.

There are sweaters, booties, hats and a simple baby banner. I plan to make more than one of the sweaters, but the baby banner has me thinking of other uses for the project. The instructions are given for four blocks – A, B, Y and a heart. It makes an adorable banner for a baby shower. But how about using the blocks separately to make cute and useful baby washcloths? For a baby shower, the decoration can be given to the mom to use them to bathe her newborn instead of buying a cute paper banner that will be discarded. Or you could make more of the squares and create a baby afghan by knitting or sewing them together.

All of these patterns look cute and fun to knit. My favorites, which are so hard to choose since I love almost every pattern, are the Sheep Sweater and the Cabled Cardigan.

I am very excited to offer a free copy of Adorable Baby Knits to one lucky person. Dover Publications has graciously sent me an extra copy to give to one lucky knitter. All you have to do to enter for the give-away is one or more of the following:

  1. leave a comment on my blog post (writeknit.wordpress.com)
  2. leave a comment on Twitter (lh171)
  3. leave a comment on Facebook (Laura Hartman)

For each of the above, you will get one entry in the drawing to be held on Wednesday, January 20, 2019. The winner will be posted on my blog, twitter and Facebook. The winner must be a resident of the continental United States. Good luck!
