Saturday – Family , Friends & Fun

Today was chocked full of things to do and things that got done. If you read yesterday’s post I had a long, long, laundry list of things to do this weekend.

So far so good. I did a few of the necessary things to do. The yearly mammogram – done. Bills paid – done. Both necessary evils.

Now for the fun stuff. The hubby and middle son worked on my cousin’s car this morning, so I got to visit with my aunt and cousin. I love just chatting and laughing with my family 🙂 While we chatted, I knitted. So I am 1/2 way done on the last project for a friend of mine. Hope to finish this week.

After they got done we went to lunch with 2 out of 3 sons (the 3rd son lives in Maryland, so he gets a pass on joining us) at the newly opened McAllister’s Grill in Naperville. We loved the one in Missouri so were super excited when this one opened locally.

Since it was so nice out we decided to clean out the flower beds. Our youngest dog, Mea, decide she would rather have us playing with her instead of getting the yard ready for winter. After we ignored her, she finally tossed her Frisbee on the grasses we were cutting down then laid on them to prove how neglected she felt.

Eventually she looked sad enough for my hubby to play a bit of fetch before it got too dark out since daylight savings time rolled in last month.

Tonight we are going to a concert, so the rest of the day will be spent relaxing and enjoying the show and good company of our best friends.

WIP Wednesday – Knitting Group

Happiest Wednesday!

Last night I was fortunate enough to be invited to a knitting group by a dear friend. We don’t see much of each other in person, but keep in touch with FB and Words With Friends. We’ve been chatting about forming an informal knitting night, and Judy graciously invited us to her home.

We chatted, catching up with old friends and met new friends. Our common bond of fiber gave us plenty to chat and laugh about. New knitters and seasoned knitters worked on on blankets, washcloths, scarves and shawls. I started the scarf for my cousin’s Christmas gift earlier this week, so that is what I took along to work on.

Judy has some great ideas for our new group. She collected email addresses and is compiling a resource list of yarn shops, websites and tips. I am very excited to hear she has the info to visit local farms that raise Alpacas . Who doesn’t love baby alpaca??

Judy shared a tip I can’t wait to use. When working a pattern where you repeat several rows for a pattern, she writes each row on a separate index card. No more counting, making marks, etc to see where you are in a pattern, you just flip the card to the back of the stack and go to the next card. When you stop for the evening, clip them together and you’ll know exactly where to start the next time you pick up your work. I love this useful tip!

To top off the night, Judy’s husband made each of us a beautiful hand turned Nostepinne. If you (like me) have never seen or used one, here is the description from The Woolery (http://www.woolery.com/Store/pc/Using-a-Nostepinne-d38.htm):

“Nostepinne” or “nostepinde” is a Scandinavian word that means “nest-stick.”; the original Ball Winder. It is a tool used to wind a center-pull yarn ball. A nostepinne is portable, easy to use, and creates a center-pull ball that can be used without changing the twist in the yarn.

I tried using mine tonight. It is going to take a bit of practice, but I am getting the hang of it 🙂

When we meet again I am going to bring the pattern and yarn for the NICU unit baby bear hats. Meantime I’ve finished my sweater, but it needs the buttons and to be washed/blocked. I’ll have pictures next week.

I hope you all have a friend or a wonderful group to hang out with and knit. Or crochet. Or Quilt…you get the idea 🙂

Culture Stock in Aurora, IL & WIP

Culture Stock - Aurora, IL

This has been a great week. Both knitting and crocheting progress made and a found a new group of fiber friends to hang out with. My cousin sent me an invitation on FaceBook to join her and a group of friends at a Culture Stock in Aurora. Today was their first meeting.

Culture Stock is a “Book Store · Performing Arts Education · Lounge” located in Aurora, IL at 43 E. Galena Blvd. For those of you that grew up in and around Aurora, it is in the building that used to house Fannie May candies and is right next door to the fabulously wonderful Riverfront Playhouse.

Comfy and cozy, Culture Stock is a bright open space. The Fox River flows past the same windows that frame the renowned Paramount Theater Marquee. Sitting areas invite conversation and relaxation. While a great mix of books call to all bibliophiles.
I joined my cousin and nine others on the maiden voyage of fiber art enthusiasts. Knitting, crocheting and counted cross stitch were represented. Needles clicked while we chatted about projects, kids, techniques and pets. Projects were shared, tips passed along and websites recommended.

I hope everyone had as great a time as I did. I can’t wait to go again next week. If you live in the area, check it out.
Now for the work in progress updates. Only nine more snowflakes to completion on the afghan project. I couldn’t stand by my resolution to complete that afghan before starting another project. Knitting needles called me and I answered.

The gal I work with showed me a scarf she was working on and I immediately fell in love with the pattern. It is a fairly easy project. All knit with short rows creating a rippled edge scarf that will be perfect for a Christmas gift. I’m using Knit Picks Stroll Glimmer in pomegranate. It has a fun silver fiber woven throughout which will make it just right for Christmas. Check out the pattern on my Ravelry site – I’m writeknit.

I suspect my WIP will show more progress on the scarf than the afghan this week. I’ll keep you posted. (pics from Culture Stock’s FB page & the Paramount’s website. And my cell phone :))
